Coolant is a recurring consumable cost for every CNC shop. Beyond the purchase price, factor in sump life, disposal cost, and the impact of coolant quality on tool life and part quality. This calculator gives the total cost of ownership perspective.
With proper maintenance (concentration control, tramp oil removal, pH monitoring): 6-12 months for water-miscible coolants. Without maintenance: 1-3 months before bacterial growth causes rancidity. Synthetic coolants tend to last longer than semi-synthetics and soluble oils because bacteria cannot metabolise synthetic lubricants.
Cheap coolant may cost $5/litre vs $12/litre for premium. But premium coolant lasts 2x longer in the sump, provides better tool life (10-20% improvement), reduces rust and dermatologist issues, and requires less maintenance. The coolant purchase price is typically under 10% of the total cost of using it.
Extend sump life (reduces disposal frequency), use a coolant recycler/centrifuge (removes tramp oil and fines), consider minimum quantity lubrication (MQL) for certain operations, and compare disposal quotes from multiple licensed waste handlers.
