The lead angle is the angle between the thread helix and a plane perpendicular to the thread axis. It affects cutting geometry, insert shim selection (anvil), and thread milling strategy.
Lead angle is measured from the perpendicular plane to the thread axis. Helix angle is measured from the thread axis itself. They are complementary: lead angle + helix angle = 90°. In turning inserts, the anvil seat angle corresponds to the helix angle.
Standard threading inserts are flat (0° anvil). For threads with helix angles above 3-4°, you should use an angled anvil seat to maintain proper clearance. Otherwise, the insert flank rubs on the thread flank.
Single-point thread mills can accommodate any lead angle by tilting the toolpath. For multi-tooth thread mills, the tool must match the thread's lead angle — using the wrong tool produces distorted thread forms.
