Request a Proposal →What does a bad number cost you? Let's run the math on a typical job shop scenario. If your Thread Lead Angle is 15% too aggressive, you're not just buying more OSG end mills — you're paying for unexpected downtime, rework, and missed delivery dates.
| Premature Mitsubishi Materials tool failures | $6,400/yr |
| Unplanned machine downtime | $12,200/yr |
| Rework / scrap parts | $8,700/yr |
| Excess Haimer holder wear | $2,100/yr |
| Total Annual Loss | $29,400/yr |
Now flip the scenario. By optimizing Thread Lead Angle — using the manufacturer's recommended starting parameters for your specific OSG or Mitsubishi Materials tool, verified on a Mahr presetter — you could recover nearly $30K annually. That's a new Grob tool probe or a year's worth of OSG inserts.
The ROI is immediate. First part optimized, first day of savings.
The lead angle is the angle between the thread helix and a plane perpendicular to the thread axis. It affects cutting geometry, insert shim selection (anvil), and thread milling strategy.
Lead angle is measured from the perpendicular plane to the thread axis. Helix angle is measured from the thread axis itself. They are complementary: lead angle + helix angle = 90°. In turning inserts, the anvil seat angle corresponds to the helix angle.
Standard threading inserts are flat (0° anvil). For threads with helix angles above 3-4°, you should use an angled anvil seat to maintain proper clearance. Otherwise, the insert flank rubs on the thread flank.
Single-point thread mills can accommodate any lead angle by tilting the toolpath. For multi-tooth thread mills, the tool must match the thread's lead angle — using the wrong tool produces distorted thread forms.
Enter the thread pitch (or lead for multi-start threads) and the pitch diameter. The calculator gives the lead angle and helix angle in degrees. Use the results to select the correct anvil seat for thread turning inserts.
