Request a Proposal โDovetail isn't just an academic exercise โ it's a daily decision point across three major machining sectors. Each industry brings its own challenges, and tooling suppliers like Nachi, Tungaloy, and Dormer Pramet have developed grade-specific responses.
Ti-6Al-4V and Inconel 718 dominate here. Nachi grades specifically engineered for HRSA materials operate at dramatically different Dovetail windows than general-purpose grades. A Makino 5-axis cell machining engine mounts needs reliable Dovetail โ there's zero tolerance for tool failure at $50K per raw forging.
High-volume production of CGI brake discs and EV motor housings pushes Dovetail to the limit. Tungaloy ceramic and CBN grades run at SFM levels that carbide can't touch. Cycle time is everything โ a 2-second per part Dovetail optimization can save $180K+ annually on a 500K-unit line.
Cobalt-chrome knee implants and Ti spinal cages need pristine surface finish. Dormer Pramet's micro-grain carbide end mills, running at conservative Dovetail, deliver the Ra <0.4ยตm required. Tool change frequency is secondary to process reliability โ an unexpected insert failure mid-cut means a scrapped implant.
The same Dovetail principle applies across all three sectors, but the optimization target shifts dramatically: aerospace prioritizes process security, automotive prioritizes speed, and medical prioritizes surface integrity. Your Nachi, Tungaloy, or Dormer Pramet rep can help you tune for your specific application.
Dovetail slides and grooves are measured indirectly using precision pins (or wires) and a micrometer. The measurement over pins method provides an accurate check of the dovetail angle and width without needing an optical comparator.
The angled flanks of a dovetail cannot be measured directly with a micrometer. Pins of known diameter contact the flanks at a tangent point, converting the angular measurement to a linear one. This is the standard QA method for dovetail slides and O-ring grooves.
The pin should contact the flanks near mid-height. A good rule: pin diameter โ 0.5ร dovetail height. Common choices: 2 mm pins for small dovetails (under 5 mm height), 3-5 mm for medium, 6-10 mm for large machine slides.
Dovetail cutters produce angled walls (typically 45 deg or 60 deg ). T-slot cutters produce a T-shaped undercut with parallel walls. Both are used for workholding slots, but dovetails provide self-aligning sliding fits while T-slots accept T-nuts for clamping.
Enter the dovetail width (at the narrowest point), height, and angle. The calculator gives the measurement over pins. Use this to set your micrometer or caliper when inspecting dovetails. For female dovetails, subtract the pin contribution instead of adding.
