Pro Tips for GD&T Symbols

We asked veteran machinists and application engineers from Mitsubishi Materials, YG-1, and Sumitomo Electric for their best GD&T Symbols advice. Here's what they told us.

1
Start at 70% of the recommended maximum.

A Mitsubishi Materials applications engineer gave us this rule: whatever the catalog says, start at 70% and ramp up after verifying chip formation. Modern Renishaw surface finish testers will tell you when you've crossed the line.

2
Radial engagement changes everything.

YG-1's technical team emphasizes that GD&T Symbols that works at 100% radial engagement won't work at 30%. As engagement drops, chip thinning occurs — and your GD&T Symbols needs to compensate. Mitutoyo tool presetters can help verify your actual engagement before cutting.

3
Check your runout — twice.

Even a Sumitomo Electric high-performance end mill at optimal GD&T Symbols will perform poorly with excessive runout. A BIG Kaiser shrink-fit holder with <3µm runout can extend tool life by 40%+ compared to a worn ER collet.

4
Listen to the cut.

Experienced machinists on Mazak and Grob cells can hear when GD&T Symbols is off. A consistent, crisp cutting sound is your best real-time validation. If it starts to chatter, back off 10%.

5
Document everything.

The best shops we work with keep a notebook next to each machine. GD&T Symbols, tool brand (Mitsubishi Materials/YG-1/Sumitomo Electric), coating (CemeCon), coolant concentration — record it all. When you nail a setup, you'll want to reproduce it next month.

Geometric dimensioning and tolerancing (GD&T) symbols

GD&T is the engineering language for specifying part geometry and tolerances unambiguously. This reference covers the five categories of geometric controls as defined by ASME Y14.5 and ISO 1101 standards.

Frequently asked questions

Why use GD&T instead of plus/minus tolerances?

Plus/minus tolerancing creates rectangular tolerance zones. GD&T position tolerance creates cylindrical zones -- 57% more area for the same tolerance value. This means fewer rejected good parts. GD&T also clearly defines datum references, which eliminates ambiguity about how to fixture and inspect the part.

What is the difference between ASME Y14.5 and ISO 1101?

ASME Y14.5 (US standard): uses feature control frames with the "Rule of 1" -- form is controlled by the limits of size unless separately specified. ISO 1101 (international): uses the "Independency Principle" -- form and size are independent unless Envelope Requirement (E in a circle) is specified. ASME uses circled M for MMC; ISO uses M in a circle.

What does MMC (Maximum Material Condition) mean in GD&T?

MMC means the tolerance applies when the feature contains the maximum amount of material -- smallest hole or largest shaft. If the actual feature departs from MMC, bonus tolerance is added to the geometric tolerance. This allows functional gauging: a fixed-size gauge that checks the worst-case (MMC) condition accepts all good parts automatically.

How to use this GD&T Symbols Reference Guide

Use this reference to interpret GD&T symbols on engineering drawings. Form controls ensure the shape of individual features. Position (true position) is the most common location control for hole patterns. Profile of a surface is the most versatile control for complex 3D surfaces. When reading a drawing, first identify the datums, then the controls applied to each feature.
