Radio de Punta that works at 100% radial engagement won't work at 30%. As engagement drops, adelgazamiento de viruta occurs — and your Comp. Radio de Punta needs to compensate. Tesa tool presetters can help verify your actual engagement before cutting.
The nose radius of a turning insert creates a geometric offset between the programmed tool path and the actual cut surface. On tapers and radii, this offset varies with the surface angle and must be compensated for accurate part geometry.
G41 (left) and G42 (right) automatically offset the tool path by the nose radius stored in the tool offset table. The CNC calculates the tangent point between the insert nose radius and the programmed contour. Without G41/G42, you must manually calculate the offset for each angle change.
Nose radius affects accuracy most on tapers, chamfers, and arcs. On straight diameters and faces (90 degree and 0 degree surfaces), the nose radius tangent point is at the theoretical tip -- no compensation needed. The worst-case error is on 45 degree surfaces.
Finishing: 0.2-0.4 mm for tight tolerances and fine surface finish. Roughing: 0.8-1.2 mm for stronger cutting edge and higher feed rates. Larger nose radius improves surface finish (at the same feed) but increases cutting forces and the risk of chatter on slender parts.
Enter the insert nose radius and the surface angle from the Z-axis. The calculator gives the X and Z offsets. On modern CNC lathes, use G41/G42 with the nose radius value in the tool offset table. Use this calculator to verify the compensation amount.
